23 September Is the International Day of Sign Languages

Every year on 23 September, the world celebrates the International Day of Sign Languages as part of the International Week of the Deaf. On this day in 1951, the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was founded. This memorable date proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 2017 is designed to draw attention to the importance of sign languages in the lives of millions of deaf and hard of hearing people around the world.
