The World Tourism Day is annually celebrated in many countries of the world on 27 of September. This holiday was established by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Torremolinos, Spain, in 1997. There was a good reason to choose this date. On this day, in 1988, the Charter of the World Tourism Organization was adopted.
The purpose of the holiday is to promote tourism, popularize its contribution to the world economy, emphasize the importance of social and cultural aspects of tourism, and develop the relations between different states.
Over the past half century, tourism has become one of the fastest growing and most important sectors of the world’s economy. It accounts for 10% of world GDP and in recent years has demonstrated sustainability and even growth, despite the global economic crisis, natural disasters and epidemics. For some countries, tourism is also the main revenue item of the state budget. For Slovenia, tourism is an intensively and successfully developing industry, which is of key economic importance, and requires a large number of highly qualified and creative personnel.
The World Tourism Day is a holiday for every person who has at least once acted like a true traveller, escaping from the office routine and the bustle of a metropolis to a tropic beach, forest, mountains or in other cities and countries rich in sights. Of course, this is a holiday of those who are directly engaged in the tourism business: employees of travel companies, museum workers, managers and staff of hotel complexes, as well as future specialists in the tourism sector.
