On Wednesday, 13 June 2018, the election of a new Rector of the University of Maribor took place. Zdravko Kačič, a professor of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, was elected for the position of a new Rector. In the second round, with an insignificant overweight of 51.9% against 48.1%, he outstripped the acting Pro-rector Žan Jan Oplotnik. The number of participants in the elections was 2,316 people.
Zdravko Kačič has been working at the University of Maribor since 2003, teaching for the “Electrical Engineering” and “Telecommunications” study programmes. Since 2010, Kačič has been working as the Head of the Institute for Electronics and Telecommunications, which is part of the faculty structure. In 2011–2015, when the university was headed by Danijel Rebolj, Zdravko Kačič held the post of Pro-rector for Finance, and before that he had been the Deputy Dean for Finance at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics. In 2013, Kačič was a member of a working group for drafting a Law on the financing of higher education at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of Slovenia.
Among the key points of the Zdravko Kačič’s electoral programme is the promotion of a culture of dialogue; development of system solutions for the transfer of knowledge and technology; improvement of the internal evaluation system; provision of proper status and role of students in the decision-making process; regulation of the status of non-pedagogical staff; as well as the preparation of the Development Strategy of the University of Maribor for the period until 2030.
