Awards and Titles to the Best of the Best: The University of Maribor Celebrates its Birthday

On Wednesday, 18 September 2019, the University Day was celebrated at the University of Maribor. Since its opening in 1975, the university has become a respectable educational institution, the main purpose and credo of which is the distribution and popularisation of knowledge. The University of Maribor is among 5% of the world’s best universities.

To celebrate the 100th birthday of the first rector of the University of Maribor the honorary professor Dr Vladimir Bračič, the current Great Hall of the university administration has been renamed to the Vladimir Bračič Hall.

During the ceremony, the Leon Štuklj Prize for outstanding sports achievements, the certificates for a significant contribution to extra-curricular activities at the university, the certificates for high achievements in culture, and the certificates for volunteering were awarded to the university students. Besides, the highest title of Honorary Doctor of the University of Maribor was awarded for the outstanding achievements in the activities of the University of Maribor and the strengthening of its image. On the proposal of the Faculty of Health Sciences, this title was awarded to Prof. Dr Hugh McKenna. The honorary title of Philanthropist of the University of Maribor assigned to individuals or legal entities for a significant contribution to the activities and development of the University of Maribor was awarded to Prof. Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry Alexander Kübler on the proposal of the Faculty of Medicine.
