You have decided to enter a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree programme in Slovenia, but you are worried that you do not speak Slovenian and may have problems with adapting to the new linguistic environment, aren’t you? Do not worry, the Slovenian language is similar to other Slavic languages. Given your willingness and diligence, you will quickly master it.
Future foreign students are given several opportunities to learn the language depending on what level of knowledge they want to achieve.
Year Plus is addressed to full-time foreign students who are first enrolled in a Slovenian educational institution. It provides applicants with a possibility to re-enter the first academic year in case of insufficient knowledge of the Slovenian language. This right can be used by the students enrolled in the Year Plus programme who have successfully passed their exams within the specified study programme with 24 ECTS credits and the Slovenian language exam with 6 ECTS credits.
Learning Slovenian as part of the Year Plus programme is free and runs in parallel with the regular academic process during the first and second semesters. The programme is not designed for the students who enter the study programmes requiring the knowledge of Slovenian at B2 level. The Slovenian language courses held as part of the Year Plus programme provide foreign students with a possibility of easier adaptation to the new linguistic environment and achievement of optimal progress in the language mastering.
The language is taught in groups with at least 20 students. Attendance is mandatory. After completing the programme and passing successfully the exam, students receive a qualifying certificate within the Year Plus programme, which is not the same as the language knowledge certificate.
Please, note that this programme is available only at two Slovenian universities – the University of Ljubljana and the University of Primorska. Number of available places is limited. Thus, for example, this year, the University of Ljubljana has allocated 839 slots for foreigners, while the Year Plus programme offers only 300 slots. Submission of documents will start in September 2020 and end after the last slot is occupied.
If you start learning the language from scratch or possess basic knowledge, you have an additional opportunity to deepen your knowledge of the Slovenian language by signing up to one of the linguistic courses organised by 2TM. The courses are accredited by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports of the Republic of Slovenia.
2TM organises high-quality Slovenian language courses divided into various groups, taking into account the needs of future students. The company offers intensive courses; intensive+ courses; advanced courses; 6- and 12-month courses. The courses are held in Ljubljana and Maribor. The language learning groups consist of 15 students. The Slovenian language study programme includes the basics of grammar, vocabulary, orthoepy, spelling, and oral speech.
