The University of Ljubljana is the only Slovenian university among the world’s 500 best universities according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai Ranking. The University of Ljubljana is part of a group of universities occupying the 401–500 places.
When included in the oldest and most respected ranking of universities, the Shanghai Ranking, 30% of points are given for Nobel laureates, 20% for researchers with a high citation index, 40% for research achievements of employees, and 10% is a correction based on the number of scientists. Universities that do not have Nobel laureates must rely on other criteria. The University of Ljubljana proofs that, even though there are no Nobel Prize winners among the academic staff, it is still quite possible to enter the list of 500 best universities given the proper quality level of the educational services.
The University of Ljubljana is also present in the other three leading university rankings. So, according to the ranking prepared by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), the University of Ljubljana has risen by 97 positions this year and has taken the 370th place among more than 18 thousand universities of the world. In the Times Higher Education Ranking (THE), the University of Ljubljana is among the educational institutions that occupy the 601–800 places, and in the QS World University Rankings, it holds a strong position among the 651–700 places.
