Bread Slices Fried in Wine (Šnite)
Many Slovenian poets and writers ascribed magical powers to the world of Karst. The bread slices fried in wine (šnite) is quite a specific dish, which the housewives of that region often cook. They also allowed themselves to do a little magic and used a local wine of the Kraški Teran brand instead of milk. The result? Simply amazing taste.
Ingredients for 4 portions
- 8 slices of stale bread or toasts
- 2 dL of the Kraški Teran wine
- 2 eggs
- 4 teaspoons of lard
- 3 teaspoons of sugar
Pour wine into a deep bowl. Whisk eggs in a separate bowl. First dip bread slices or toasts into wine from both sides, then put into the egg mixture.
Put a pan on the fire, heat there 4 teaspoons of lard, and fry the bread slices in it from both sides. Put “Šnite” on a plate. Then sprinkle them with powdered sugar and serve.
It is best to use the stale bread or toasts, which have already laid for a couple of days.
