Castle Overhaul Starts in the Resort Town of Štanjel
The project of repair and restoration work involves repair of the roof, ceilings and floors in the dungeon and the left lower tower, delivery and installation of the new furniture and façade landscaping.
The renovated castle will also have a new wine cellar with an area of 200 square metres. The first and second stages of the repair and restoration work in general will cost 560 thousand euros. In 2018, another 340 thousand euros of municipal and irrevocable funds will be additionally allocated.
In the coming year, the next stage of the castle restoration will begin. It will include a full development of the castle’s attic area with further launching of the Nature 2000 information centre. On the eve of the holiday season start, an art cafe and a hostel will be opened.
The commune municipality managed to raise extra funds for purchasing a special electric-powered vehicle referred to as Kavalir by holding a tender. It is intended to transport tourists around the historic centre of the city, who, due to health problems, could not discover it on their own. The car will be delivered to Štanjel in early 2018.
In June 2017, almost 800 people visited the information tourist centre in Štanjel. In July, this figure grew to 1,047 visitors, and in the first half of August, it already reached 938 people. During the recent long holiday weekend, the organisers recorded more than 2 thousand visitors. Half of them were local tourists. The majority of foreign visitors come from Italy, Germany and England.
