Celebration of the European Language Day in Ljubljana: Programme of Events

Annually, since 2001, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated on 26 September in order to maintain linguistic diversity of Europe as an instrument for achieving better intercultural understanding, developing of strategies to teach and study various languages throughout the world. This holiday was proclaimed by the Council of Europe with the support of the European Union (EU) during the European Year of Languages (2001).

As part of the celebration of the European Day of Languages, a wide range of thematic events are traditionally held in different countries, including Slovenia. We bring to your attention the programme of events that will be held these days in Ljubljana.

Wednesday, 26 September, 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m.

Representative Office of the EU, Dunajska, 20:

“Let’s Play with Languages”, linguistic creative workshops for children in cooperation with the French Institute and other institutions (for kindergartens and first-graders).

Friday, 28 September, 9:30 a.m.

Bežigrad Cinema, Linhartova, 11:

“Small Linguistic Mosaic” (for 1–5 graders of basic schools): the programme is available for participation of pupils from basic schools of Ljubljana and suburbs, the French Institute in Slovenia, the Balassi Institute – Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Hungary, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Embassy of Georgia, the Association of Slovenian Sign Language Interpreters, Roman Denim and other guests.

Friday, 28 September, 11:00 a.m.

Bežigrad Cinema, Linhartova, 11:

“Big Linguistic Mosaic” (for 6–9 graders of basic schools): the programme is available for participation of pupils from basic schools of Ljubljana and suburbs, the French Institute in Slovenia, the Balassi Institute – Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Hungary, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Embassy of Georgia, the Association of Slovenian Sign Language Interpreters, and other guests.

Other Events:

All week long, creative workshops for preschool children, pupils of basic and secondary schools are held in the capital by cultural and linguistic centres of Slovenia: the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, the Goethe Institute in Ljubljana, the French Institute in Slovenia, the Balassi Institute – Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Hungary, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the National Gallery (Japanese hieroglyphs and support in a foreign language). Creative workshops and presentations in schools will be held by the Embassy of Georgia (Georgian alphabet and culture, Michael Marolt), the Association of Slovenian Sign Language Interpreters (Roman Denim) and other guests.

From Saturday, 22 September, to Saturday, 29 September:

CLIL House, Vojkova, 87: games and creative workshops in different languages for children from 5 to 12 years and for adults, the Festival of Languages and the Children’s Cultural Centre “Pod mojim blokom”.

Thursday, 27 September, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Multisensory approach to teaching languages, educational courses for educators and teachers. Held by Master Mojca Leben / Festival of Languages (entrance fee, ask about the venue).

Saturday, 29 September, 4:00 p.m.

National Gallery, Prešernova, 24:

“European Linguistic and Fairy-Tale Observation Wheel” – an animation programme with a creative workshop in the open air. Families of foreigners currently residing in Slovenia are invited (the programme is being prepared in cooperation with embassies and representative offices in Slovenia).

Saturday, 29 September, 20:00 p.m.

Entertaining evening “Every End Is a Beginning” – closing of the Festival of Languages 2018 and the announcement of the Festival of Languages 2019
