Celje Pivovarna Laško – 21-Time Slovenian Handball Champion

The club from Celje remains the absolute favourite of national handball tournaments. In April, it won the Slovenian Cup in Maribor, and on 25 May it won the championship by defeating Krka (Novo Mesto) with a score of 38:26 (18:14). The Gorenje Club was the second having beat Koper.

Since the time when Slovenia gained its independence, the Celje Pivovarna Laško Club only five times failed to receive the champion title. For the first time, it lost the championship in its native town during the 2001/02 season. Then the Prule 67 Club celebrated the success. Gorenje Velenje gained the title of the strongest team for three times: in the seasons of 2008/09, 2011/12 and 2012/13. The gold medal went to the Koper Club only once in the 2010/11 season.

The champions will play the final match of the season against Gorenje Velenje on 2 June at the Zlatorog Sports Palace.

Last weekend, other fights of the penultimate round of the Slovenian Handball Championship were held. This week, the decisive matches for the right to stay in the Major League will take place. It is already known that Slovenj Gradec 2011, Dol TKI Hrastnik, Drava Ptuj and Istrabenz plini Izola will leave the elite division. Besides, Herz Šmartno and Slovan B SRL entered the Premier League from the 1 B SRL League.
