Cuisine of Slovenia’s Regions: Cottage Cheese Pie with Plums

Cooking time – 90 minutes.


  1. 1 yeast cube,
  2. 300 mL yoghurt,
  3. 90 mL milk,
  4. 90 g butter,
  5. 70 g sugar,
  6. 2 eggs,
  7. 1.5 tsp salt.


  1. 1 kg plums,
  2. 600 g cottage cheese,
  3. 150 g Kaymak cheese,
  4. 150 g sugar,
  5. 1 egg (for topping).


Mix salt and flour in a deep bowl and add yeast melted in milk. Add the rest of the ingredients except the butter and knead the yeast dough. While kneading the dough, add gradually the softened butter. In the end, knead together all of the ingredients intensively for 10 minutes. Cover the finished dough and set aside to rise.

While the dough rises, cook the filling. Mix cottage cheese and Kaymak cheese. Peel plums and cut into thin slices.

Fluff the rising dough, set aside for a few minutes to rest, and then roll out into a rectangle. Spread with filling, put in plums and sprinkle with sugar. Roll the filled dough. Cut a few slices, which should then be placed in the middle of the rectangular mould/baking dish, leaving from one side as much space as the diameter of the roll. Place the remaining roll on the opposite side of the baking sheet in the shape of the letter U, thus filling the entire sheet. On both sides, where the roll ends, leave about 1 centimetre of empty space. Use scissors to cut the roll into slices, which should be turned to the side where the roll ends. Alternating each slice, put them a little to the left (or a little to the right) to get a nice shape. Having reached half a roll, stop cutting in this direction. Then start cutting the roll with scissors on the other side, and again spread the slices to the side where the roll ends (where a little empty space is left), cutting and placing the slices in the same way as on the opposite side of the roll. Cut into slices until you reach the part that has already been cut from the other side.

Put the ready cake to rise in a warm place. When the cake rises, coat it with a beaten egg and put in a preheated oven. Bake for about 50 minutes at 175 ºС, so that it acquires an expressive shade and is well baked. If necessary, cover with foil so that the cake does not burn.
