Famous Slovenian Potica Cake Is One of the Vatican’s Favourite Desserts
The Slovenia’s Ambassador to the Holy See Tomaž Kunstelj and a married couple of confectioners Franz and Sonja Jezeršek baked eight Christmas hazelnut potica cakes. One of the cakes was cooked personally for Pope Francis. All three persons are masters of cooking potica cakes. According to the Slovenes, they are inspired by the aromatic smell of nuts, rum and lemon peel.
“When, in a conversation with the Pope, we involuntarily start talking about potica cakes, a beautiful and beaming smile always enlightens his face,” Tomaž Kunstelj notes, adding that one potica cake was baked personally for Pope Francis and the second one will be presented to the honourable Pope Benedict. According to him, some high-ranking officials in the Vatican, employees of the State Secretariat, Swiss guardsmen, gendarmes, will also be lucky to try this Slovenian delicacy.
