Footballers of the University of Maribor Won Over Their Rivals from the University of Ljubljana

On Wednesday, 30 May 2018, a friendly match between football teams of the University of Ljubljana and the University of Maribor took place for the sixth time in a row. The meeting was held at the ŽAK Stadium in the Ljubljana Šiška sports park.

Students, teachers and other football fans came to support the teams. Among the fans, there were also the leaders of both universities – the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr. Igor Papič, the Pro-rector of the University of Maribor, Prof. Dr. Marko Jesenšek, as well as the Minister of Education, Science and Sport, Dr. Maja Makovec Brenčič.

In the 20th minute, a student from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana, Marcel Kene, scored the first goal. The only goal in the second half was scored by Mitja Križan, a student from the Faculty of Education of the University of Maribor, who established the final score of the regular match time – 1 : 1. This meant that the outcome of the meeting would be decided in a series of post-match penalties. Football teams made 8 penalties each. As a result, Uroš Polanc, the goalkeeper of the Maribor team, killed the game with a decisive save.

The final score 8 : 7 in favour of the University of Maribor was the most productive in the history of matches between the teams. The general statistics of the meetings is as follows: 1 draw, 3 wins of the University of Ljubljana and 2 wins of the University of Maribor.
