It Is Worth Seeing: A Large-scale Shrovetide Festival Kurentovanje to Be Held in Ptuj until 5 March

On Saturday, 23 February 2019, the traditional 59th International Shrovetide Festival Kurentovanje started in Ptuj. The streets of the Old City were filled with students – costumed actors in sheep’s skins with bells representing mythical Shrovetide characters. The most popular among the guests of the festival are horned kurents.

The performance of fairy-tale heroes, the tradition of which has been part of the cultural heritage of UNESCO since 2018, did not leave indifferent the spectators of the colourful procession. In addition to the characters of Slovenian mythology, 11 Shrovetide heroes from 6 countries of the world took part in the Saturday procession, in particular, the Croatian “buši” and the Bulgarian “sourvakarji”.

When opening the festival, the Mayor Nuška Gajšek, according to the tradition, transferred the power over the city to the Shrovetide spirit – Dark Cafuta, the Prince of Carnival.

The events associated with the Kurentovanje fest will last until Tuesday, 5 March 2019. More information about the festival programme and its traditions can be found here.

It should be added that by the beginning of the festival, an exhibition of 113 artworks by local authors was opened in the Mayor’s office. It will work until 8 March 2019.
