Lake Bohinj Is One of the Most Striking Natural Attractions of Slovenia

In the coming weekend, when the temperature exceeds 30 °C, Lake Bohinj, the pearl of the Julian Alps, will become a popular holiday destination for crowds of tourists and locals. Visiting the lake can be combined with the ascent to the mountain meadow of Vogar, from where one of the most picturesque panoramas of the Upper Carniola region opens. When the air becomes hot from the summer heat, you can go down to the lake and enjoy the life-giving coolness. The water temperature in the coming days will reach 23 ºС.

The Vogar mountain meadow (Planina Vogar) is located at 1,050 meters above sea level in the vicinity of Lake Bohinj and is a traditional leisure destination among tourists.

For ascending, you can use the marked and non-marked (more complex) routes that meet in the forest. The route passes along stony ground. The ascending takes 1–1.5 hours.

The route to Vogar starts in the village of Stara Fužina. To get there, you need to take the right turn at the Lake Bohinj (Ribčev laz) to the bridge and drive past the Church of St John the Baptist (Cerkev Janeza Krstnika). When you get to the Aljaž Tower (Aljažev stolp), slow down right near the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) and in front of the Mercator store. At the crossroads, near the chapel, take a sharp turn to the left to the Blato and Vogar mountain meadows and the Voje Valley. Then drive along the road passing the village right up to the Vorančkovci parking lot. 1 hour of parking will cost 1.5 euros.

The Kosiv’s house on Vogar (Kosijev dom na Vogarju), which operates under the auspices of the Association of Mountain Climbers (SLovene: Planinsko društvo Železničar), is also considered one of the 72 mountain hostels (Slovene: planinske koče) participating in the Naj planinska koča program. You can vote for it on the Siol.net website.

If you want to take a walk through the mountains, you can visit Koča na Planini pri Jezeru (a 1.5 hours walk). At the end of August, one of the lucky winners determined by drawing on the siol.net website will become the administrator of the local hostel for 1 day.

You can continue your walk to the Vodični vrh mountain meadow (a 1.5 hours walk), to the Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih Hostel (3 hours 45 minutes) or to the Mount Pršivec (2 hours 30 minutes), where you can enjoy beautiful landscapes at an altitude of 1,760 meters above sea level.

You can also take children to the Vogar mountain meadow. However, it is worth remembering that you have to overcome 500 meters uphill. If this is difficult for you, it is better to reach the mountain meadow by car or bicycle, and then walk up to two viewing platforms.

“Vorančkovci Parking is the start of the route to the Mostnica River flows and the Voje Valley. The route is suitable for family holidays,” advises Grega Šilc from the Hike and Bike travel agency. The entrance ticket will cost only 3 euros. There are special discounts for certain categories of visitors.

You can see natural flows formed by the Mostnica River running through Stara Fužina. The most famous local attractions include the Hudičev Bridge (Hudičev most) at the route end (within a 5-minutes’ walk from the parking lot) and a stone rock called “baby elephant” (Slovene: Slonček) due to its shape. From the river flows, you can turn to the Voje Valley, where there is a mountain hostel at the very beginning of the valley. At the Mostnica River flows, you can relax and refresh yourself in the Slap Voje cafe.
