Ljubljana Becomes a Finalist of the Urbanism Academy Competition
Ljubljana became a finalist of the Urbanism Academy competition for the Urbanism Awards 2018 in the category European City of the Year. The best city was declared Spanish Bilbao, the capital of Basque Country. The solemn ceremony of announcing the winners was held in London.
Awards are presented by the Academy of Urbanism, which is an autonomous, politically independent organization that promotes unique cities. It consists of more than 500 specialists from different spheres. Annually they choose 15 cities finalists in five different categories.
Experts who evaluated Ljubljana, first of all, paid attention to the cleanliness and cared-for look of green plantations, and also pointed to the green development strategy of the city. They especially stressed that practically all vehicles had been removed from the centre of the Slovenian capital and its territory became a pedestrian zone with bicycle lanes.
Urbanism Awards is a platform for identifying the best, most sustainable or most comfortable urban agglomerations in Europe. In 2017, its specialists focused on the problem of urban development after 1945 and improvement of cities in this period. The expert commission assessed the level of ensuring a high quality of life in several areas.
