Maribor Claims to Be the European City of Sport 2018

In this way, the city seeks to attract more foreign guests to participate in competitions. The competition results will be summed up in Brussels in December.

The Municipality of Maribor applied for the European City of Sport 2018 competition in cooperation with the city sports administration, Institute for Sports Facilities Maribor (Slovene: Športni objekti Maribor), Maribor – Pohorje Tourist Board, Public Institution (Slovene: Zavod za turizem Maribor – Pohorje, javni zavod), and the Marprom state enterprise.

Next week, the ACES EUROPE European Cities and Capitals of Sport Federation will come to the city with an inspection. It will check the state of sports infrastructure and conditions for doing sports.

As noted by the municipality authorities, the receipt of a new title will allow Maribor to promote its image in the sports services and tourism market. According to their estimates, it will also have a positive impact on the lives of local residents, who will pay more attention to sports.

The European City of Sport title is awarded annually in three categories: capital of sport, community of sport, and city of sport. Maribor belongs to the latter category.

The title is of symbolic nature and does not bring additional financial resources to the city.

It should be recalled that in 2012, Maribor was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture and in 2013, it became the European Capital of Youth.
