Maribor Continues Its Victorious Path in the Champions League

Having beaten Icelandic Hafnarfjörður (1:0, at the sum of two matches – 2:0), the champion of Slovenia entered the 4th qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

The Maribor footballers repeatedly defeated the local champion, the Hafnarfjörður football club, in Iceland. Thanks to the efforts of the Club’s veteran Marcos Tavares, the Club secured itself a football autumn in the European cups.

Blaž Vrhovec, who shot over the crossbar from a long distance, lost the first chance. At first, Marcos Tavares also missed an opportunity to jump ahead.

In the final minutes of the second period, Maribor had a great tug to reach the defensive end sitting on the lead. The hosts had a chance to score from a dangerous free kick, when Marko Šuler carelessly played in defense, and Valdimarsson shoot right to the hands of the Slovenian goalkeeper Handanović.

In the 80th minute, Luka Zahovič missed another sure scoring chance, who was trying to hit the net after a precise high ball from the right. After his kick, the ball hit the crossbar of the Icelanders.

Marcos Tavares drove the nail to the head of the opponents at the last minute by scoring the winning goal.
