Mark Zuckerberg Allocates 1.5 Million US Dollars for the Research by Jure Leskovec, a Professor at the Stanford University
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Organization, founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, allocated 1.5 million US dollars for each out of 47 scientists, who have innovative ideas on treatment of various diseases. A Slovenian scientist, Stanford University professor Jure Leskovec, is also among the grant owners.
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub will transfer these funds during the next five years. The Zuckerberg Foundation in total allocated 50 million US dollars (approximately 47 million euros) to support promising scientists with grants.
A computer science professor at the University of Stanford Jure Leskovec was selected despite the fact that, in general, he deals with the analysis of social networks. He substantiated his application for the grant competition with the fact that his research would allow biologists to understand the complex mechanisms of interaction in the human body during illness treatment.
Mark Zuckerberg Supports the Best and Most Promising Scientists
Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan founded the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Organization in September 2016 and invested 3 billion US dollars (approximately 2.4 billion euros) in it. The aim of the organization is to support scientists, engineers and technicians involved in research in the field of treatment and prevention of diseases.
The Organization collaborates with researchers of three universities: the Stanford University, the University of California in Berkeley (California), and the University of California (San Francisco).
Jure Leskovec graduated from the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Science of the University of Ljubljana. He then continued his studies at the Carnegie Mellon University (Pennsylvania, USA), where he received his PhD. He continued his education in the Cornell University. Since 2009, he has been teaching at the Stanford University located in the Silicon Valley. In 2016, he became a professor at Stanford. In 2015, Jure Leskovec presented his start-up Kosei and joined the Pinterest Company team, which develops one of the most popular and fastest growing social networks in the world.
