Matevž – Pureed Beans and Potatoes
Matevž puree is a traditional Slovenian dish that every woman cooks in her own way. Matevž is served with sauerkraut or turnip, as well as meat dishes (to taste): German bratwurst sausages, hot pot, grilled pork chops or smoked ham. The dish can be sprinkled with pork rinds, fried pieces of bacon or fried leek. Pureed beans and potatoes contain proteins, dietary fibre and a great deal of other nutrients.
Ingredients for 4 portions
- 0.5 kg potato
- 0.5 kg beans
- 0.5 dL olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic
- salt, pepper
- Boil potatoes in lightly salted water. If the recipe uses boiled beans (or canned beans), then add them to the potatoes a few minutes before the end of cooking, so that they could warm up.
- Drain water, add crushed garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and puree potatoes until ready. Some like soft homogeneous puree, while others prefer puree with pieces of potato and beans.
Serve the dish with sauerkraut, turnip or other dishes included into your daily diet.
Matevž can be cooked as a garnish for any dish instead of the usual mashed potato.
