The Slovenian cyclist successfully overcame the quarterfinal stage after falls of two his rivals. In the semi-finals, he was the third, but reached the finals thanks to the subsequent disqualification of another racer. In the finals, being only the fourth on the distance, he managed to take advantage of the falls of all his three competitors and make the winning finishing spurt .

Throughout the tournament, the athletes fairly pleased their fans. One could not remain indifferent when watching all those overtakes, exciting races, jumps, downs and falls. Five athletes represented Slovenia during the tournament, played out according to the playoffs system. The same number of participants was from Germany. The dramatic ending of the championship brought a gold medal to Mitja Ergaver.

The silver went to the main favourite of the competition — the Austrian Hans Slavik, the bronze — to the British Luca Cryer, and the American Barry Noblz was the fourth. All three conceded the Slovene as a result of falls at the last sharp turn before the finish. The World Champion in cross-country skiing Philip Flisar, who this time tried his hand at mountain biking, was eliminated in the quarterfinals, and Urban Rotnik, Kevin Berginc and Matija Stupar left already the first round of the competition. As a result, Flisar took 10th place, Rotnik — 18th, and Berginc — 22nd.
