Mitja Ergaver Is the World’s Champion in Mountain Biking in the Four-Cross Category
In the decisive final race, he was the fourth, when something incredible happened…
The Slovenian mountain biker Mitja Ergaver became the new world’s champion in the four-cross discipline. This is the result of the Championship conducted in the Italian resort town Val di Sole (the Trentino Province). In the decisive final race, he managed to take advantage of all three downs of his rivals and, with a touch of fortune, won the champion title.
Throughout the tournament, the athletes fairly pleased their fans. One could not remain indifferent when watching all those overtakes, exciting races, jumps, downs and falls. Five athletes represented Slovenia during the tournament, played out according to the playoffs system. The same number of participants was from Germany. The dramatic ending of the championship brought a gold medal to Mitja Ergaver.
The silver went to the main favourite of the competition — the Austrian Hans Slavik, the bronze — to the British Luca Cryer, and the American Barry Noblz was the fourth. All three conceded the Slovene as a result of falls at the last sharp turn before the finish. The World Champion in cross-country skiing Philip Flisar, who this time tried his hand at mountain biking, was eliminated in the quarterfinals, and Urban Rotnik, Kevin Berginc and Matija Stupar left already the first round of the competition. As a result, Flisar took 10th place, Rotnik — 18th, and Berginc — 22nd.
