For the period from May 2011 to mid-October 2018, the Bicikelj bicycle rental system has been used by 156,277 people who made almost 5.6 million rides.
The Bicikelj system is the fruit of the public-private partnership of the municipality of Ljubljana and the Europlakat Company. It includes 58 stations with 580 bicycles and 1,146 parking lots. Today, 37,300 active users of the bicycle rental system have an annual subscription.
The bicycle rental system is the most popular in summer and autumn, and the least – in winter. In the morning, users usually rent bicycles at stations located at the city outskirts and in residential areas, and go to the centre. Most often, bicycles are rented at stations located in the Cankarjev Street and on the Prešeren and Congress Squares.
The average bicycle rental time is 15 minutes. Trips longer than an hour are practically not observed. The bicycles were used most actively on 10 October 2018 – 6,277 trips, while the average time spent on renting of one bicycle was 2 hours and 47 minutes.
It should be noted that in 2017, Ljubljana ranked eighth in the World Copenhagenize Bicycle Friendly Cities Index 2017. According to representatives of the municipality, the Slovenian capital has also joined the international network “Cities for Cyclists” operating within the European Cycling Federation. Ljubljana has developed bicycle lanes with a total length of about 260 kilometres.
