The Formula Student – Grand Prix Engineering Maribor Association, under the auspices of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics of the University of Maribor and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Maribor, in cooperation with numerous sponsors, presented a new autonomous electric vehicle.
The car is manufactured in accordance with the safety rules and recommendations of Formula Student – the world’s largest competition for engineering students, who compete annually in various static and dynamic disciplines. Students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics of the University of Maribor and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Maribor participate in the project gaining valuable practical experience.
The basis for the manufacture of an electric car was the formula of the internal combustion engine of 2013 with the chassis being changed completely. An electric motor Emrax 228 with a power of 80 kW and with combined cooling is built into the electric car. The accumulator consists of lithium-ion cells with a capacity of 2.45 kW/h and a rated current of 240 A. The frequency converter and the accumulator management system are manufactured by EmSiso.
For land navigation, the car has a built-in 3D LIDAR MRS1000 system by SICK with a range from 0.2 m to 64 m, a resolution of 0.25 degrees and a camera of 808 x 608 pixels. For autonomous steering control, a servomotor is installed, and autonomous braking is performed using pneumatic musculature. The data is processed by a DeweSoft Sbox waterproof computer with 4 GB of RAM, an i7 processor and a 256 GB SSD. The programme status during movement is displayed by the status indicators, which are visible from all sides around the electric vehicle.
