Description of work – briefly

The profession of medical technician or nurse is a highly demanding one! He/she helps the individual, family or social group to maintain and consolidate health, prevent illness and care for sick and disabled people.

Main Objectives of Professional Activity

Health care technician /nurse is a medical practitioner whose professional field is health care. The work and tasks also depend on the area where he/she works. It is primarily an internist, surgical, paediatric and psychiatric field. The healthcare technician / nurse identifies the needs for nursing care. He/she designs, implements, monitors and evaluates health care, documents the procedures of nursing, maintains good contacts with the patients, relatives and members of the medical team. Leads a nursing team, organises his work and keeps other members updated about all the news. He/she organises, monitors or implements the prescribed diagnostic-therapeutic programme, takes samples of biological material for investigation, monitors hygiene conditions and participates in the prevention of spreading the infections. He works with the hygiene epidemiological service and with other professional services, with a laboratory, a pharmacy and a transfusion medicine institute. He/she provides safe working, personnel and material conditions, organises the purchase and use of work tools and materials and constantly controls the use/consumption of medicines and narcotics. He/she trains and runs auxiliary medical staff. As a medical educator, he/she works at all levels of health care, participates in the education of nurses and healthcare technicians, and is constantly self-educating.

Features of the profession

Field of work:  

Health technicians / nurses can be employed in:

  • 1. Primary health care - basic healthcare activities in health centres, health care centres for women, children and youth, consulting services, home care, general and family medicine, specialised outpatient activities, private health practice, social care institutions, elderly homes, institutions for the education of children and youth with mental and physical disorders, in health care institutions or in the rescue service.
  • 2. Secondary health care: in general and special hospitals, in clinics and institutes, in rehabilitation institutes and in nursing departments.
  • 3. Tertiary health care, where the most demanding outpatient and hospital treatment is carried out.
  • 4. In other areas: can work in schools and kindergartens, humanitarian and other non-governmental organisations, in social-medical, hygienic, epidemiological and health-ecological activities, in health care activities or in the field of blood supply and blood derivatives.

Work tools:

In his/her work he/she uses a wide variety of accessories: items of hygienic care of the patient, patient’s personal and bed linen, towels, soap and disinfectants, feeding accessories, such as cutlery, plates and cups. It also uses gadgets to ensure patient safety, such as guardrails, call system, stand and a special trolley. He/she uses medical technical devices such as thermometer, blood pressure monitor, injection needle, syringe, scissors, tweezers, catheter, probe, monitor and computer. The materials used at/for work can be made of textile, plastic, wood, rubber and metal. There is plenty of work also with biological and chemical materials. The documents in use are: nursing and medical documentation, investigation findings, X-ray images, order forms and billing sheets.

Knowledge and skills

During theoretical training he/she acquires knowledge from humanistic, social sciences and natural sciences and knowledge in the field of nursing care. This enables him/her to perform quality nursing care, as he/she understands theoretical starting points, methodological approach, communication, health education, ethical principles, standards and organisation of nursing care. In order to understand and practice nursing, during the course of study, he/she acquires certain medical knowledge and knowledge from psychological and sociological sciences. To start a professional path, he/she must undergo a traineeship/internship and pass a professional examination.

Psychophysical abilities

The work and tasks of a healthcare technician / nurse require appropriate psychophysical abilities and personality traits, which enable a humane and responsible attitude towards individuals and the community. Professional knowledge, precision, reliability, critical judgment, decision making and creative problem solving, communicativeness, emotional stability, humane attitude towards the patient, ability to adapt and respond rapidly, manual skills and optimism are prerequisites of successful care or nursing.


The healthcare technician / nurse must respect the dignity and privacy of the patient, patient’s individual needs and values and patient’s right to choose and decide. As a professional secret he/she is obliged to protect data on the health condition of the patient and all that is related to the personal, family and social conditions. The healthcare technician / nurse constantly introduces novelties in the field of nursing care.

Working conditions

Health care technicians / nurses work indoors or on the field - there can be hot, cold, wet, smelly, dirty etc. It’s a 24-hour shift work: morning, afternoon and night. He/she can work in the form of on-call and also on Sundays and public holidays. The work is predominantly standing or walking. He/she often bends and raises heavier loads when turning and placing the patient in an appropriate position. The health technician / nurse works in a team and is always in contact with people. He/she is most commonly in contact with the patient and members of other services within the scope of his/her activity. He/she also works with patient’s family members, friends and acquaintances.

Hazards / Risks

There is a risk of infection when working with biological materials, such as blood collection and an infected wound. It is threatened by radiation, chronic diseases of the spine, acid damage, disinfectants, highly flammable liquids, needles and syringes. Therefore, the nurse uses protective agents, such as work clothes, footwear, mask, gloves, protective sheath and disposable sacks. The healthcare technician can avoid hazards and injuries if he/she has sufficient knowledge, skills and if he/she works by the rules of occupational safety.
