Mechanical engineer designs machines, devices and other industrial products, runs project groups and plans technological processes.
Main Objectives of Professional Activity
The fields of work carried out by the mechanical engineer are extremely diverse and broad. Among other things, the mechanical engineer can deal with design and construction planning. The world's most profitable products are generally brand new and patent-protected products, since they are the result of a planned development work. Mechanical engineers are key experts in developmental groups and are well aware of the overall design methodology. In all branches of industry and in other parts of the economy, machines, devices and vehicles make the material basis of production, processing and manufacture. Any failure of the machine due to a malfunction means stopping the operation and thus not only the basic damage, but also much higher secondary damage. Where machines, equipment and vehicles are large, an engineer is required to maintain them. Good knowledge of the machine composition and anticipation of possible failures can reduce possible stopping of production and, above all, reduce secondary damage. As a rule, larger companies and systems have their own maintenance services. Mechanical engineer often prepares production-market parameters, takes care of the provision of protective measures and environmental protection, and communicates with customers.
Field of work:
Mechanical engineer is employed in all industrial activities, crafts, trades, as well as in non-economic activities. His/her work can be extremely versatile and wide. The development of electronics and powerful computing systems has led to the synthesis of mechanical elements, various sensors, and hardware and software computer equipment. Equipped machines can be computerized and integrated with transport units into flexible cyber systems. Today, the cybernetics production covers a number of activities that enable the control of the processing systems. This includes computer-aided design (CAD), technical design with expert systems (CAPP), the production of individual components with computer-controlled CNC machining machines (CAM), material quality control (CAQ) and assembly and control (CAA) control. The engineering area of the mechanical engineer is also the management of employees and the management of individual projects in production.
In his/her work, the engineer uses various tools, machines and devices. Lately, the main working tool is a computer on which it builds and constructs complex elements. The basic materials used by the mechanical engineer are alloyed and unalloyed steel, coloured metals, castings, white metals, special steels and others. It can also use protective equipment if necessary.
Product and service
The products are: machinery and plant constructions and other industrial products, designs of machines and devices, project group management, technological process design, production management and organization, designs of installations and power plants and aircraft maintenance. He/she can be an expert formulating expert opinions and expert decision making, an intellectual property expert, and the like.
To pursue a profession it is necessary to acquire knowledge in the appropriate higher education institutions. A mechanical engineer is fully qualified for independent work. He must master all the knowledge of the mechanical profession and management knowledge.
Engineer carries out the work in enclosed workplaces, rarely outdoors. The most important mental and physical features to successfully work in the profession: the ability to solve technical problems, common sense and ingenuity to solve mathematical problems.
A mechanical engineer must have a highly developed sense of responsibility for his work, he must be self-initiative, ingenious, capable of judging new situations. In his/her work, one must be communicative, must know what he/she is expected of and the work must be done well. An engineer must be ready to work in groups and must have an interest in functional education.
The mechanical engineer works mostly in closed and regulated workplaces, he/she performs the job completely independently, although in the presence of others, one often works in two or even three shifts.
Hazards / Risks
The work of an engineer is usually not physically demanding. Due to its precision, it needs normal vision, hearing and healthy hands. One also needs a healthy backbone, because the work is largely connected with sitting and a slightly bent posture.

The average salary of a mechanical engineer in Slovenia is € 1,800 per month gross.
