Promising Start of the Third European Universiade for Slovenian Student-Athletes

On Tuesday, 12 July 2016, the first competition of the Third European Universiade started, which takes place in Zagreb and Rijeka in Croatia. According to the number of participants, this year games are the largest sporting event of the Old World and in the history of Croatian sport.

The games involve 23 kinds of sports, including two kinds for athletes with disabilities. In general, 5,700 athletes and accompanying officials from 41 European states and 394 institutions of higher education take part in these games.

The University of Ljubljana is presented by the second largest delegation in this sports show. Its representatives won a medal on the first day of the event. The first success of the Ljubljana delegation was ensured by karateka, who won a bronze medal in the team competition. “The first day, the first medal. However, certainly not the last,” the Slovenian karateka give their optimistic forecasts.
