Results of the University of Ljubljana Athletes at the Third European Universiade
During the second week of the competition conducted as part of the Third European Universiade held in Zagreb and Rijeka, Slovenian students demonstrated a number of good achievement, except for the two bronze medals won by karatekas and a bronze medal won by chess players.
The handball players from the University of Ljubljana lacked a bit of luck to win medals. In the fight for the 3rd place, they lost to their rivals from the University of Zagreb. “Taking into account all the events and problems that have occurred over the past couple of days (athletes injuries), the 4th place was quite a good result for us. In Rijeka, we have reached the goal and made our way into the quarterfinals. Thus, we are very satisfied. As a team, we have achieved more than it was expected from us. I want to thank my students and I hope that next year we will get together again and will prepare for new games in Spain,” Anette Merslavich, the coach of the students-athletes, already evaluates their perspectives.
Not far from the podium, on the 5th place, the competition was finished by the basketball players from the University of Ljubljana, as well as by the water polo and handball players from the University of Primorska.
Before the start of the Universiade, the students hoped for higher places, but despite the disappointment, they played all the matches until the end with maximum of endurance and dedication.
In Zagreb, the Slovenian students-athletes continue to fight for the medals in the classic volleyball, beach volleyball, table tennis, badminton, and golf competitions. Today the tournament of mountain climbers has started. In Rijeka, after a few days of break, the female and male swimmers, taekwondo practitioners, judokas and street basketball players will compete on Saturday.
The Slovenian Organization of Students, the Foundation of Sports, the relevant Ministry, the University of Ljubljana, the University of Primorska, the Gea College, and the Coris insurance services supported the participation of Slovenian students at the Third European Universiade 2016.
