Slovenia Is Recognized as One of the Best Countries for Women
This fact is evidenced by The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Index, which includes 153 countries. Its data were submitted to the UN in late October. The first three places in the world Index were taken by Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. Slovenia got the fourth place.
The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Index has been developed by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) and the Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO). It takes into account the three main aspects of women’s well-being: inclusion, justice and security. It covers all areas from the education and financial inclusion of women to the use of mobile phones, discrimination and violence.
Slovenia ranks fourth in the Index with the highest rates of financial inclusion of women and the use of mobile phones. The Index also shows that almost all women in Slovenia, as a rule, possess higher education. The overwhelming majority of women consider their communities safe.
In general, the best countries in the world for women are Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia, Spain, Finland, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Singapore, Denmark, Germany and the United Kingdom. The United States take the 22nd place, partly due to the lack of a legal basis for equal pay for the labour of women and men as well as the legally guaranteed paid maternity leave.
Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Mali, Sudan, Niger, Lebanon, Cameroon and Chad are at the bottom of the list.
The ranking is updated every two years.
