Slovenia National Football Team Defeats Lithuania
In the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, Slovenes defeated their opponents with a score of 4:0. The national team of Slovenia will hold the next match on 5 October at the Wembley Stadium against the tournament leader – the national team of England.
After an awesome play of the national team on 4 September, the second place in Group F again becomes a reality. Slovakia is only one point behind.
The Slovenes showed a completely different game than in the match against the Slovaks. The head coach Srečko Katanec got it right by fielding the changed starting line-up. The Slovenes won the middle of the field and could almost unimpededly conduct attacks. Josip Iličić bagged a brace having twice converted a penalty kick. In the 82nd minute, Benjamin Verbič turned the match into a blowout with a score of 3:0.
The starting period of the match was enough to show that Slovenia wants to rehabilitate for the previous inexpressive match with Slovakia in Trnava.
“We control the game, but must pass another ball. A one goal advantage is not enough,” Tomaž Kavčič, an assistant to the head coach, noted during the break. Thus, the Slovenians succeeded, despite the fact that Lithuania lead a more dangerous game, almost equalizing the score in the 68th minute.
A reservist Valter Birs set the final score in the 90th minute of the match. He skilfully defeated the Lithuanian backs and shot on target from 15 metres.
Almost 6,230 people came to the Stožice Stadium in Ljubljana to watch the match. Referee: Istvan Kovacs (Romania).
