Slovenian Judoka Becomes the World’s Vice-Champion in the Weight Category under 90 Kg

In a decisive fight, 23-year-old Mihael Žgank lost to the 21-year-old Serb Nemanje Majdov. The equal fight continued into overtime after the Slovenian received a second penalty (“shido”) for fighting outside the ring.

In the semifinals, Žgank had an advantage of the tournament’s main favourite – the champion of Europe Serbo Alexander Kukol. The fight between the two judokas lasted for almost 7 minutes. Žgank won the fight with a waza-ari score, having stacked the ranking’s favourite on his shoulders.

In the quarterfinals, Michael managed to defeat the current world’s champion titleholder and bronze medallist of the last Korean Olympic Games Donghan Gwak.

In the women’s standings, Anka Pogačnik from the weight category under 70 kg left the tournament in the second round. Klara Apotekar in the 78 kg weight category crashed out after the first fight. On Thursday, Tina Trstenjak won a silver medal in the category under 63 kg.
