Students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation and Architecture of the University of Maribor Become the Authors of a Memorial Designer’s Bench

In front of the former men’s’ prison “KPD” in Maribor, the Memory bench was installed. Its authors are students of the Architecture Master’s degree programme from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation and Architecture of the University of Maribor – Maja Žalik, Tjaša Pauko, Lucija Cvejan, and Sara Milič. The artistic bench is dedicated to the history of the former men’s’ prison building. Its original design is not accidental – the bench displays a complex historical heritage and a period of decline of the building, as well as the beginning of its revival.

The idea of installing a memorial bench next to the building of the former prison was implemented as part of the international European project – URBACT 2nd Chance – Waking up the Sleeping Giants: Sustainable Regeneration of the Prison Building (URBACT 2nd Chance – Prebujanje spečega velikana: Trajnostna regeneracija objekta KPD). The Municipality of Maribor and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation and Architecture of the University of Maribor participate in the project.

It should be added that this bench is the 14th in a series of benches made by the Cultural and Artistic Society – History of Benches and People (Zgodba o klopeh in ljudeh). This non-profit public cultural organization unites authors of unique designer’s benches (architects, sculptors, designers, and artists) who are ready to donate their creative ideas to Maribor.
