The 200th Anniversary of the Postojna Cave Discovery
One of the main tourist attractions in Slovenia, Postojna Cave, has celebrated the 200th anniversary of its discovery. A solemn ceremony to commemorate this event took place in Postojna on Friday, 16 November 2018 under the patronage of President Borut Pahor. Within the framework of the festive ceremony, a concert was held with the participation of the famous Italian musician Matteo Bocelli, the Slovenian singer Nuška Drašček and other performers.
200 years ago, on 14 April 1818, in preparation for the visit of Emperor Franz I, a lamplighter Luka Čeč accidentally discovered the new spaces of the Postojna Cave. Today Luka Čeč is considered to be the founder of tourism in Postojna.
It should be noted that this year, the Postojna Cave was visited by a record number of tourists – over 1 million people. The majority of tourists were from Italy, followed by Germans, Koreans and Slovenes.
