The 25th Academic Year Is Started at the University of Nova Gorica
On Thursday, 17 October 2019, the grand opening ceremony of the 25th academic year at the University of Nova Gorica was held at the Lanthieri Mansion in Vipava. The Rector of the university Prof. Dr Danilo Zavrtanik addressed the audience with welcome remarks and shared his memories of the university foundation in 1995.
During the ceremony, Danilo Zavrtanik awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the University of Nova Gorica to the world-famous specialist in molecular spectroscopic methods and biomedicine Prof. Giacinto Scole for his outstanding scientific and professional achievements in the temporary dielectric spectroscopy and life sciences. An international expert in the protection of economy of culture, art and memorial heritage, Prof. Dr Xavier Greffe, has also become a Professor Emeritus of the University of Nova Gorica. He was awarded this title for his significant contribution to the formation of the international reputation and development of the University of Nova Gorica, as well as for his exemplary work as a teacher and scientific adviser. For his exceptional contribution to fundamental research in molecular biology and cytology at the University of Nova Gorica, the title of Honorary Member of the University of Nova Gorica was awarded to the international expert in biology and carcinogenesis of HPV viruses, Prof. Dr Lawrence Banks.
Besides, nine students were awarded during the event. Thus, the Alumnus Primus award was received by the graduate Josipa Škrapić, who was the first to complete the studies among the students of her intake. Alumnus Optimus awards were awarded to the graduates who had the best academic performance in a particular academic year: Andrea Torroni, Gaja Tomsič, Zala Zbičajnik, Nik Obid, Nika Kravos, Ana Cukjati, Nada Ihanec, and Josipa Škrapić.
To date, the educational process at the University of Nova Gorica takes place within 5 faculties, the Academy of Arts and the Higher Professional School. By this time, 233 doctors of sciences, 396 masters and 895 bachelors have graduated from the university. Research activities are carried out on the basis of 6 centres and 4 laboratories equipped with the most modern equipment. From year to year, the number of foreign students is growing. In the 2019–2020 academic year, the share of foreign entrants as compared to the total number of students is 54%. This year, representatives of 48 countries are studying at the University of Nova Gorica. The University of Nova Gorica is constantly improving and supplementing its study programmes. Thus, since the current academic year, the university has opened a Master’s and PhD programme in Materials Science and a Master’s programme in Viticulture and Winemaking. Currently, the procedure for transforming the Higher School of Viticulture and Winemaking into the Faculty of Viticulture and Winemaking is in progress.
