The 58th International Shrovetide Carnival Is Held in Ptuj
Last weekend, numerous guests flew to the streets of the oldest city in Slovenia enjoying the beautiful sunny weather. In total, 41 groups of costumed actors and about 700 kurents (an extravagant god of unrestrained pleasure and hedonism in early Slavic customs) took part in the main carnival procession in Ptuj. The same number of participants again pleased the inhabitants of the surrounding settlements with the ringing of bells and jumps.
According to preliminary data, more than 50 thousand guests visited the Shrovetide Carnival in 2018. In addition to the traditional local characters, Kurents, costumed actors from France, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia, Belgium and Macedonia attended the festival.
Every fourth spectator at the festival wore a mask. Among the participants of the carnival procession were many young people, pupils and small children.
The Ptuj Carnival has already become a kind of calling card of Slovenia. A special status of the event was confirmed by its inclusion into the UNESCO list (https://2tm.si/ancient-slovenian-rite-is-included-into-the-unesco-list/?lang=en) of Intangible Cultural Heritage in early December last year in South Korea.
