The Application Procedure for the 17th Contest of Theses on Slovenian Emigrants and Slovenian Diaspora Has Started

The Government Department for the Slovenian Diaspora has announced the 17th international contest of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD theses devoted to Slovenian emigrants and the Slovenian diaspora. The purpose of the contest is to encourage the research work of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students in the field of studying diaspora and emigration, and thereby to strengthen the awareness of its importance for preserving the Slovenian identity in the home state and beyond.

Candidates from Slovenia and foreign countries can participate in the contest. The subject of the contest is a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD thesis successfully defended in any university of Slovenia or abroad devoted to the Slovenian diaspora and emigration. The authors of theses defended during the period from 1 November 2017 to 31 October 2018 are invited to participate in the contest. Deadline for submitting materials is 3 December 2018.

The works will be evaluated in two categories: Slovenian Diaspora and Slovenian Emigrants. There are 3 awards for both categories. The first prize is 800 EUR, the second prize is 600 EUR, and the third prize is 400 EUR. Besides, the contest committee may, in exceptional cases, award the best Bachelor’s degree thesis with a special prize of 400 EUR.

The works proposed by the committee, at the request of their authors-laureates, will also be able to receive a recommendation from the Press Department.

It should be noted that in the previous 16 contests that included 304 theses, 99 participants were awarded, the majority of whom represented Argentina, Germany, Serbia, Switzerland, but first of all Italy and Austria.
