The Delegation of the Municipality of Maribor Conducts an Official Visit to China

The Mayor of Maribor Andrej Fištravec with his advisor Marko Kovačič and other officials of the municipality conduct the fifth official visit to China. The first city visited by the delegation of Maribor was the 8-million metropolis of Xian, which is planned to be linked with the regular flights from Maribor. Andrej Fištravec and the Vice Mayor of Xian signed an agreement on the Slovenian-Chinese economic cooperation.

The official delegation of Maribor, in addition to Andrej Fištravec and Marko Kovačič, includes a member of the administrative council Tomaž Kancler, a member of the Maribor Development Agency Board Magdalena Šverc, the Head of the mayor administration of Maribor Marjeta Kristofić Jamnik and the Press Secretary and the Head of the Protocol Service Simona Partlič. In China, they were joined by the Counsellor for Economic Affairs of the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Beijing Miloš Prislan.

According to sources in the municipality of Maribor, the signed agreement relates to the field of investment, culture, transport and sport. On the eve of agreement signing, an official meeting of the Mayor of Maribor Andrej Fištravec and Wang Yongkang, the Communist Party Secretary of Xian (Zhōngguu Gtngchǎndǎng—in Chinese), was held. During his visit to Xian, the centre of the 37-million Shanxi Province, the Maribor delegation held a meeting with the leadership of the local city administration, tourism management and industrial zone, and visited the famous technology company ZTE.

Andrej Fištravec paid a visit to the headquarters of the SHS Investment Fund and met with representatives of the Xian-Xianyang Airport. During the meeting, they held talks about the opening of flights between Xian and Maribor, as well as cooperation in the field of technology and new investments in Maribor and the suburbs.

The Maribor official delegation will stay in China for a few days. The next visit destination will be Shanghai, where the members of the delegation will take part in the investment forum under the auspices of the local Chamber of Commerce.

During the cadence of Andrej Fištravec, 18 official delegations from Slovenia have visited China. On the other hand, 35 official delegations from China have visited Maribor: from Ningbo, Huai’an, Shanghai, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Nanjing, Nanchang, Wuhan, and the official delegations from the provinces of Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Fujian.

As emphasized in the municipality of Maribor, in the same period, Chinese investors held more than 20 official visits to Maribor. Last year, two streams of children from Wuxi County came to train in the local football school in Maribor. Children spent two weeks in the capital of Slovenian Styria.

Maribor representatives pointed out that, according to the Statistics Service, last year 1,408 tourists from China visited Maribor, which is almost three times more than in 2013, when the figure was only 598. Last year, due to 2,971 overnights of Chinese tourists, the local tourist industry received almost 330,000 euros of revenue.
