The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation and Architecture of the University of Maribor Takes Part in the European Researchers’ Night 2019

On Friday, 27 September 2019, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation and Architecture of the University of Maribor took part in the European Researchers’ Night 2019 in the Maribor’s Europark shopping centre.

Teachers of the faculty, assistant professor Dr Anita Praprotnik Brdniktri and assistant Dr Marko Jaušovec, prepared a number of interesting projects for students. In particular, they presented various ways to solve tasks of a sales representative (mileage calculation, computer monitoring of a route and algorithms for its planning). Students also made a model of an assembled bridge using wooden parts without adhesive materials, having calculated its mass.

In addition, students prepared an organic form of assembled two-dimensional wooden elements, which are made of plywood through digital assembly by using a CNC machine. Their goal was to use complex 2D elements to find a complex organic form and use cut plywood as efficiently as possible. Using the Grasshopper parametric software in combination with Rhinocerous industrial 3D modelling, they converted the organic plane shape to 2D elements and assembled them using a CNC machine. Using this technique, students proposed several design solutions that represent the same final shape. They also selected three solutions that would go into production and be assembled locally. Thus, they combined the aesthetic features of architecture with structural knowledge of construction and linked them to a sustainable concept for the efficient use of materials through parametric modelling.
