The FERI Faculty of the University of Maribor Holds the Country’s Largest Student Event on Computer Games

On 21–22 April 2018, the largest student event on computer games, Epicenter FERI LAN, took place at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Maribor. It was attended by more than 400 contestants from Slovenia and neighbouring countries, which is a record number for such events in the country.

The event was held with the technical support of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications. The Student Council of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Maribor and the Society of Electronic Sports SPID.si also participated in the organization of the event.

It should be noted that at present electronic sports relate to the most dynamically developing category of video games, which has its tournament grid, live broadcasts and solid prize funds. Epicenter LAN is the largest event of such kind in Slovenia. Thus, 8-game tournaments were held within its framework: Global Offensive, League of Legends, PUBG, FIFA 18, Hearthstone, Fortnite, Rocket League and Pro Evolution Soccer. More than 350 people took part in the tournaments. Official competitions took place during two consequent days while the majority of participants continued to play at night.

In addition to exciting video games and communication, contestants and spectators could take part in other events. About 200 visitors watched the live broadcast of video games. Some of them also visited the stands of sponsors and inspected the latest computer equipment and peripherals, as well as tested them in practice.
