Recently, a completely renovated house of the famous architect Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana has received the Europa Nostra 2018 award. This year, 160 applications from 31 European countries were submitted for this award. In total, 29 laureates from 17 countries were selected as the award winners.
It should be noted that the award has been presented by the European Commission since 2002. The award is presented for exceptional achievements in the field of cultural heritage protection, study and popularization of cultural and architectural monuments.
The official awarding ceremony will take place in the Berlin Congress Centre on 22 June 2018. The hosts of the ceremony will be Tibor Navracsics and maestro Plácido Domingo. In the course of this ceremony, seven Grand Prize winners will be announced (each of them will receive 10,000 EUR). The final winner will be determined by open public voting. The honorary guest of the event will be the Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Jože Plečnik is the most famous architect in the history of Slovenia. He played a key role in designing the appearance of the modern Ljubljana. In 2013–2015, the Jože Plečnik House Museum was completely renovated and is currently open to visitors. The work budget was 2.26 million Euros. Today it is one of the most visited tourist attractions of Ljubljana.
