The Mayor and Head of the Federal Province of Vienna, Michael Häupl, said among other things that Zoran Janković was awarded this Order for his contribution to the development of friendly ties between Vienna and Ljubljana, as well as for the implementation of effective municipal policy in Europe. Michael Häupl emphasized that the Viennese Municipal Council unanimously adopted a decision on awarding Zoran Janković with the Order of Merit, which indicates a deep respect of local authorities to the Mayor of Ljubljana.

It should be noted that Ljubljana became a finalist of the Urbanism Academy competition for the Urbanism Awards 2018 in the category European City of the Year. The best city was declared Spanish Bilbao, the capital of Basque Country. The solemn ceremony of announcing the winners was held in London. Experts who evaluated Ljubljana, first of all, paid attention to the cleanliness and cared-for look of green plantations, and also pointed to the green development strategy of the city. They especially stressed that practically all vehicles had been removed from the centre of the Slovenian capital and its territory became a pedestrian zone with bicycle lanes.
