The Monday’s Seminar in Computer Science and Informatics
A lecture as part of the Monday Seminar in Computer Science and Informatics of the Information Sciences and the UP FAMNIT and UP IAM Technologies Departments was held in the building of the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies at the University of Primorska, Glagoljashka Street, 8, Koper at 4:00 PM on Monday, 16 May 2016.
Audience: FAMNIT-1-MP2, at 4:00 PM
Lecturer: Sasho Moshkon
Theme: The Seabed Mapmaking
The oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, and we know about them much less than about the planet’s mainland. We possess only 5% of information about the Earth’s seabed, but even these data cannot be compared with the similar data on the mainland by its practical usefulness and accuracy. We present a reliable and practical method of acoustic seabed classification. We will look at the entire process, from receiving the raw data to the map of seabed types.
The method developed by us was applied to the problem of algae mapping in the Slovenian sea. The efficient mapping of algae is a very urgent problem, since the EU directive provides for the cyclical monitoring of the algae prevalence. In accordance with the established methodology, we studied the hydrographic measurements and developed a map of seabed types for the entire Slovenian coast of the Adriatic. We identified 36 major types of algae and proved their existence through the method of point sampling. The implementation of this method in a real situation was successful. Therefore, we confirmed the practical importance of our methodology and showed that the acoustic classification of the seabed and the multidimensional sonar data were of considerable potential in studying the sea depths.
Welcome to our lectures!
