The National Month of Collective Reading-2019 Starts in Ljubljana

This year, the Municipality of Ljubljana has joined the educational event called National Month of Collective Reading-2019, which will be held from 8 September (International Literacy Day) until 13 October – the end of the Children’s Week. One of the event’s goals is to reach at least 15 minutes of reading per day. All people aware of the role of reading in the enlightenment of the individual and society are invited to participate in the event.

It should be noted that in Ljubljana, there are many societies and organisations that conduct events aimed at promoting the culture of reading at the local, regional, national and international levels. In 2019, the Ljubljana Is Reading project is being implemented in the city. Children are presented with high-quality original books, which are selected through an open national tender. As part of this tender, another 12 cultural projects are being held.

Since 2015, the capital of Slovenia has been part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network together with 28 other cities of the world promoting books and reading. In 2017, Ljubljana was awarded the Reading Friendly Municipality title for the implementation of a number of projects that steadily contribute to increasing public awareness of the important role of books, reading and reading culture in general.
