The Port of Luka Koper Launches the Work on the Expansion of the First Pier

On Thursday, 25 July 2019, the Port of Luka Koper launched the work on expanding the first pier. This major infrastructure project is designed to ensure the further development of the port and increase its international competitiveness.

The project envisages the construction of an operational pier with a length of 98.5 metres and a width of 34.4 metres, as well as a rear part on the south side of the first pier with an area of 24.83 square metres. The first pier on the south side, intended for container handling, will have a length of 695 metres.

The project will be implemented in four stages. The main works will begin no earlier than September 2019 upon completion of the stage of experimental pallet installation and the monitoring stage. An open tender for the selection of a contractor is still in progress.

The total project budget is about 235 million euros. Upon completion, the annual port capacity will be at least 1.5 million 20-feet containers.

The project, which, among other things, is funded by the European foundations, is expected to be completed in 2021. The expansion of the first pier is a strategic investment project that will allow the Port of Luka Koper to maintain its status as the largest container port in the North Adriatic.
