From Thursday, 6 September 2018, until Sunday, 9 September 2018, the 48th annual national festival of folk costumes was held in Kamnik. This is the largest ethnological event in the country. Around 1,900 people in Slovene national clothes and traditional clothing of the world’s peoples took part in the costumed procession around the city. The organiser of the festival was the Municipal Department for Tourism, Sports and Culture.
The Prime Minister Marjan Šarec addressed the participants and guests of the event. He stated that this festival exalts the Slovenian tradition, culture and heritage, and also stressed that people who do not respect their culture and heritage are doomed to disappear.
A rich entertainment programme was prepared for the guests of the festival. During the event, four exhibitions, a competition of accordion players, and performances of folk ensembles took place.
Just during the final day, the festival was visited by several thousand guests. In total, the festival of folk costumes is visited annually by more than 30 thousand inhabitants of Slovenia and foreign countries. According to The Guardian, “Days of Folk Costumes and Textile Heritage” (the official name of the festival) is among the twenty best traditional festivals in Europe.
