The University of Ljubljana Hosts the UNESCO Chair

The University of Ljubljana has secured international recognition and opportunities for further research work in the field of natural disasters. This is evidenced by the fact of launching the UNESCO Chair on Water Related Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy of the University of Ljubljana charged itself with support of the UNESCO Chair. Thus, over the next four years, the Chair will be able to continue the hitherto successful international activities in the field of water-related disasters research.

The UNESCO Chair will primary focus on cooperation in achieving the objectives of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP). One of the directions of its activity will be the implementation of the “More Space for Water” project and custody of its authority within the Slovenian and international environments.

In 2017, the Chair will cooperate in the organization of doctoral summer school on the problems of natural disasters at the University of Ljubljana, which will be also attended by the University of Brescia (Italy) and the BOKU University of Vienna (Austria).

Today, the UNESCO Chair main priority is to support the organization of the fourth Global Forum on Landslides Problems, which will be called the “Investigation and Reduction of Landslide Risks for the Development of the Culture of Co-existence with Natural Disasters.” It will be held in Ljubljana, from 29 May to 2 June next year. The University of Ljubljana is one of the organizers of this international conference.
