Three Major Investment Projects in Education and Science Are Claimed in Maribor

The Mayor of Maribor Saša Arsenovič met with the Minister of Education, Science and Sport Jernej Pikalo and the Minister of Culture Zoran Poznič. During the meeting, the Minister of Culture announced the provision of financial assistance for the construction of a new library in Maribor. Saša Arsenovič estimates that the budget for the construction of the library, according to preliminary data, will be approximately 15 million euros. The construction works are expected to begin in 2020 after the provision of all necessary documentation and to finish until 2022.

In turn, the Minister of Education, Science and Sport Jernej Pikalo announced two strategic investment projects in Maribor totalling 55 million euros. “The most important challenge for us is to build the only supercomputer in Slovenia on the basis of the Institute for Information Sciences, which will become the 8th largest supercomputer in the EU and 35th in the world, which is our largest investment in scientific infrastructure. The project budget is 26 million euros,” said the Minister.

The second investment, which is planned in Maribor, weighs 29 million euros. The funds will be allocated to the University of Maribor. “This is a university project related to economics, science and development. This project is already in progress. Its content concerns the purchase of research equipment, which has no analogues either in Ljubljana or in Graz. This research equipment can attract leading scientists to Maribor,” said Jernej Pikalo.
