Through Trains from Ljubljana to Venice and Trieste Are Planned for Launching in September
In September 2018, it is planned to launch through trains from Ljubljana to the two important cultural and tourist centres—Venice and Trieste. The trains will perform round trips twice a day as reported by the Slovenske železnice Company.
The operator will be the Italian state carrier Trenitalia. The route will include a separate stop near Trieste airport. Opening of a new railway station near the Airport of Trieste is scheduled for 19 March. Active negotiations on the development of these routes continue between the Slovenian and Italian competent authorities.
Today, a train trip from Ljubljana to Trieste and Venice is possible only with a change at the Opčine station. According to Slovenian officials, the Slovenian and Italian tour operators show considerable interest in new routes.
Italy is a favourite holiday destination for Slovenian tourists. However, there is no direct air communication between the cities mentioned.
