Tourism in Slovenia Should Become a Separate Scientific Discipline

The Days of Slovenian Tourism 2016 were held in Radenci from 11 to 13 October. This is a key event for all professionals of the tourism industry. The deans of the Faculty of Tourism Science of the University of Primorska and the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor had a meeting as part of this event.

During the meeting, the leaders of two faculties agreed that based on the trends of the science development, the tourism in Slovenia should officially become a separate scientific discipline. Within the framework of the register of research areas at the SRA (the Slovenian Research Agency), the “Tourism” discipline should be given a special code, which will distinguish it out of other scientific disciplines. The leading academic institutions outside of Slovenia already consider tourism as a separate scientific discipline.

It was noted that the introduction of a separate code for the tourism discipline will allow the implementation of a deep and long-term basic research that will positively affect the development of tourist facilities in Slovenia and the successful economic exploitation of the tourism resources in Slovenia.

The Dean of the Faculty of Tourism Science of the University of Primorska Prof. Dr. Janez Mekinc and the Dean of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor Prof. Dr. Boštjan Brumen signed a document, according to which the faculties will apply to the SRA to make tourism an officially registered full-fledged scientific discipline. The Slovenian Tourist Board and the Chamber of Tourism support the efforts of the leaders of both faculties.
