Track and Field Athletics Is Easier than Parenting

Brigita Bukovec is convinced that today we send our children to sports competitions too early.
(The interview was prepared on the eve of the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro)

Twenty years have passed since the time, when the Slovenian athlete brought the first Olympic medal to her country. A resident of Ljubljana, Brigita Bukovec, won a silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles and is now satisfied with the current Games, which she will watch on TV. The athlete abides by the professional sport and her famous principles. She is not too optimistic about the current state of the Slovenian sports. She never hesitates to talk about this issue and points to the current problems.

Have you prepared for the Olympic Games?
Yes! I like to watch competitions and sporting events.

Are you interested only in athletics?
No way. I am interested in everything.

The Slovenian national team now enters the fight for the top places and medals.
The team members are in good shape. I believe in the team and I think that it can spring a surprise. This usually happens at any competition. As a rule, it is all about one distance.

Did the athletes of your time speak aloud about their wish to win a medal?
We always discussed who could actually win a medal. I personally always said that the forecast was a thankless job. We are people, and not robots. Anything can happen. It is frustrative to miss a medal.

Did you have a presentiment of rising to the victory podium in Atlanta?
No, I did not.
