What Awaits the Labour Market in the Next 10 Years?
Microsoft researchers claim that by 2025 more than 60% of all existing professions will undergo changes in connection with the technological revolution, which we already can witness today. Technologies are developing so fast that the education system simply does not keep up with the rapidly changing labour market. The time when people obtained one education and one profession “for a lifetime” has passed. Today, university is only the first step, a place to receive general knowledge.
Throughout life, a person acquires new skills in accordance with the challenges offered by the modern times. Education has become “fast”, that is, today it is possible to master a new profession in record short terms (from 1 month to 2 years). European universities offer study programmes for the retraining of employees, which allows an employee to save its working position, while employers do not spend money and energy on finding the “right person”.
Within this month, we will publish materials about the professions of the future. Is it worth looking far ahead and choosing a study programme based on research publications, or, maybe, choose a family affair? Choose something stable, or decide to try yourself in something new. So, what is the right way to behave?

So, what professions will be most in demand in the labour market in 10–15 years:
Bioengineers, Human Body Designers
People capable of restoring damaged organs and producing prosthesis thereby returning people to a normal life will occupy a special place in the medicine of the future. Such specialists will be in demand in plastic medicine, which will provide a possibility for skin grafting or changing the leg length.
The fight against cancer will reach a new level: cancer-damaged organs will simply be removed and replaced with new ones, or the “evil” cells will be “destroyed” pointwise. Aesthetic medicine will reach a new level. People will get an opportunity of skin cell transplantation, a complete change in appearance, obtaining ideal body parameters.
What skills are needed: medical education, bioengineering.
Food Engineers, Specialists in Agriculture
This inter-industry profession exists today, but in the future, it will have a different meaning. Bioengineers will learn to create food products from recycled materials, algae, plants and even debris. The main issue that the experts will face in the future is how to feed the ever-growing population with minimal environmental damage.
New developments in the agricultural sector will be extremely popular. The speed of growing crops will become a priority issue, so that several crops could be gathered per year. Space biologists will be required to study the behaviour of plants in a state of weightlessness and the ability to grow crops on other planets.
With the rapid growth of the Earth’s population, huge areas will be needed to grow the main agricultural crops. In Russia, due to the large area of arable land, one of the world centres for the cultivation of wheat, oats and other cereals will be created. Export of Russian grain will increase several times. Agriculture will require those experts, who will know how to use new technological machines for cultivation of land and harvesting. Today, there is an acute shortage of such specialists in Russia.
What skills are needed: agriculture, bioengineering.
Teacher is one of the “eternal” professions. Robots will never be able to replace human teachers. Therefore this sphere will develop and be modified under the influence of technological progress. Learning will become virtual.
This is already happening today, when online universities and platforms such as Coursera are gaining popularity. Education will become interactive and playful. Virtual reality technologies will be actively used when students can immerse themselves in history using a VR helmet.
The process of testing knowledge will also be modified. Testing, in the way it is currently carried out, will fall into oblivion, while live projects will come first. People will have an opportunity to study abroad without leaving their homes!
What skills are needed: pedagogy.
